After spending 25 years working in the financial industry, I never truly pursued art as a profession until my mother, Gloria, also a self-taught artist, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996. The process of looking at and creating art helped bring us closer together. After her passing in 2002, I completed undergraduate degrees in Studio Art and Fine Art from the Univ. of Texas. Inspired by my mother I founded the Mobile Art Program (MAP). MAP provides art activities for seniors and disabled adults, building self-esteem while creating art in group settings. My commitment to serving older adults has been recognized by multiple community partners. In 2010, I was honored to be named ‘Outstanding Angel in the Community’ by A Glimmer of Hope Foundation; in 2015, AGE of Central Texas presented me with the 'Bert Kruger Smith Vision Award', which recognizes a person or organization whose vision has enhanced the older adult community and who has shown foresight and energy in implementing programs, services, or legislation that serves older adults.
